Kobi Williams has topped Friday’s two 25-minute practice sessions in Townsville, despite an unusual start to the afternoon’s running.
Williams was on the outlap when the bonnet of his Tyler Greenbury Racing entry flew open after rolling over a bump in the road. Onboard vision captured the moment the young gun’s eyes widened in surprise, before he went on to set the fastest lap of the day: 1m14.0410s.
Overall, less than one second separated the top nine as the field prepares for three races across a milestone-marking weekend, with the championship celebrating its 100th round. The fastest time tumbled 1.2s between sessions with rookie Xavier Avramides claiming the top honours in Practice 1.
Williams improved steadily across the day, jumping from fifth in the order to pip Lincoln Taylor – who likewise improved between outings – by 0.1791s for the top spot late in the second session.
Former champion Oscar Targett showed he’s not taking a quiet approach to his cameo appearance this weekend, sitting comfortably at the pointy end of the field, third overall.
Current points leader Hunter Robb wrapped up the day fourth after leading the field early on, ahead of Avramides.
Next was Hayden Haikal, who continues to impress in his first season with the one-make Porsche series.
Seventh to 10th was covered by Ryan Suhle, Daniel Quimby, Kamal Mrad and Lincoln Evans. Times tumbled in Practice 2 overall with, the top 11 all set in FP2.
In Pro-Am, Anthony Gilbertson continued his strong practice form, quickest in Practice 2 and overall, ahead of Tim Farrell (FP2 and overall) and Marc Cini.
The weekend continues Saturday with 30 minutes of qualifying and Race 1, both live on Fox Sports and Kayo. Race 1 will also be broadcast live on Channel 7 and 7Plus.
