Tyler Greenbury Racing’s Kobi Williams converted pole position into victory in a dramatic opening race at Round 5 of Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge Australia today, holding off TekworkX Motorsport’s Lincoln Taylor and Sonic’s Hayden Haikal in a tense fight to the chequered flag.

Williams made the perfect start from pole, going side-by-side with young Kiwi Hunter Robb through Turn 1 before establishing an early 1.4-second advantage.

The race was neutralised on lap 2 when Tim Farrell found the gravel at turn 1, bringing out the Safety Car and bunching the field back together.

With just over 10 minutes remaining, racing resumed and Taylor wasted no time making his move, pulling off an over-under pass on Robb at turn 2 to claim second.

Williams immediately rebuilt his advantage on the restart back out to 1.5 seconds, but Taylor and Haikal remained firmly in contention throughout the closing stages. The trio ultimately crossed the line with just 1.5 seconds separating the top three.

Behind them, a fierce battle for the final spots inside the top 10 unfolded between Ryan Suhle, Kamal Mrad, Ruairi Avern and Lincoln Evans. Mrad’s challenge came undone on lap 10 when a left-front puncture forced him into the lane and dropped him off the lead lap.

Williams’ Race 1 victory followed an extraordinary qualifying session earlier in the day, where the top four were separated by just 0.0605 seconds, the closest top-four margin in Sprint Challenge history.

Williams initially led Taylor by just 0.0128 seconds after the opening run, with both drivers returning to the pits after completing just 5 laps. Neither Williams or Taylor returned to the track for a second run, with the Tyler Greenbury Racing youngster able to hold on and secure pole while Taylor slipped to third.

Robb came agonisingly close to stealing the top spot late in the session, finishing just over 0.03 seconds shy of Williams, with the pair sharing the front row for the start of Race 1.

McElrea Racing’s Daniel Quimby completed the top four, still under a tenth of a second from the top spot.

In Pro-Am, it was McElrea Racing’s Anthony Gilbertson who produced a lights-to-flag victory, finishing 9th outright, ahead of Stephen Moylan, who claimed 2nd in class. Dean Wanless rounded out the Pro-Am podium for Garth Walden Racing.

Mark Darling survived a late scare, spinning coming out of the final corner & onto the main straight, managing to keep his car away from the wall.

Earlier in the day, Gilbertson continued his strong qualifying form to claim the Pro-Am class pole, 1.2 seconds clear of Stephen Moylan.
